CULTURAL EXCHANGE TRIPS

Picture
Each summer, Friends of Kakamega conducts a 3-week cultural exchange trip, during which travelers from the United States get to better understand Kenya and meet some of the children and young adults we support during two weeks of "summer camp."

They bring requested supplies and offer entertainment and fun to the Care Centre, home-based, and high school children who look forward to the event each year. At the same time, and in many ways at a level far greater than anything visitors can offer or do, we observe that people who visit our programs in Kakamega find tremendous knowledge and meaning from their visits.

Camp activities include art, sports, crafts, knitting/ crocheting, games, sewing, woodworking, and singing/dancing. These weeks are filled with laughter, joy, and close friendships, the kinds of experience and learning that change lives.

Visitors who travel on the trips, referred to as “trippers,” participate in camp sessions and learn about Kenyan culture. Trippers stay at the Care Centre in Kakamega, visit villages, and get to explore Nairobi for a couple of days on their way home. The trips usually take place from the end of July thru the first weeks of August.

Trippers stay in double rooms (2 beds) in the Care Centre and eat in the Care Centre dining hall. Costs vary, depending on airfare, and include transportation to/from/within Kenya, room, and board. We also ask all who join us to meet a fundraising commitment. Anyone in good health from 16 years old and up is welcome to inquire about joining the trip; we are not a tour agency and cannot accommodate everyone, but if you're interested we would love talk further and see if you and our trip are a good fit.
